👋 Hi, I’m Felipe - a federal worker and generalist game developer based out of Campinas, São Paulo.

My fields of expertise are programming, game and level design, and I’m proficient mainly in C# scripting and the Unity Engine. More recently, I’m also teaching a class on 2D webgame development at the National Service of Commercial Apprenticeship (SENAC), using the GDevelop engine. As a game developer, I’ve worked in multiple academic, individual and collaborative projects for over 4 years, some of which may be found in my itch.io page or on the 🗃 Portfolio work section of this page.

I have a Bachelor in Computer Science (Federal University of Santa Maria, Brazil) and a post-graduate degree, lato sensu, in Digital Game Development (Estácio de Sá University, Brazil).

In addition, I have 8+ years of experience as a federal worker and administrative assistant, currently working ****at the I.T. Governance and Management Division of Brazil's Ministry of Communications. Previously, I’ve worked at the Federal University of Santa Maria.

In my career as a federal worker, among many other things, I’ve implemented Agile methodologies, developed advanced skills in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Power BI, provided direct service yearly to thousands of people and managed a multidisciplinary team responsible for the payroll and worker benefits of more than 8,000 employees and pensioners.

When designing worlds or stories, my main focus is on conveying the themes and messages of the game through non-textual storytelling, like gameplay features and design practices.

I’m deeply passionate about creating experiences that can potentially affect change in the world and shatter the barriers between individuals. Video games and their intrinsic multi-layered psychological nature are fertile ground for this kind of experimentation - as games like Journey and Death Stranding show us - and the horizon of possibility is endless.

When coding in C#, my focus is on researching appropriate programming design patterns and clean code practices, and exploring/integrating Unity's huge variety of packages and tools to my projects and prototypes.

Besides my love for video games, I’m also a prolific reader of both fiction and non-fiction. My favorite genres are weird fiction and philosophy, as well as magical realism, mythology and religion. The intersection between games and literature, particularly the challenges of translating literary genres into interactive mediums is also a subject I love to explore.

Finally, I want to use this space to register my love of cats. To the right you can see my Kiara, once drawn by the artist of the acclaimed game Wildermyth.

📝 Work process

<aside> 🔍 Research (Pre-production) When approaching a new project my first objective is defining the type of knowledge or experience I can gain from its process of implementation. Here I’ll define my target audience, engine, platform and the overall feel and genre of the game. I’ll also write a one-pager and a first draft of the project’s pitch document, as well as the first few pages of the GDD.

</aside>

<aside> 💡 Proof of Concept and Prototypes (Production) Depending on the role I’m playing/exploring, the prototyping phase can go from level wireframes and blocking, any number of Design Documents, playable prototypes (analog or digital), art assets and even short stories set in the project’s world.

</aside>

<aside> 🐞 Fixes & Improvements (Post-production) The last part of my process is spent reviewing my finished project, writing a post-mortem, holding a meeting with other team members to discuss what we’ve learned and releasing any needed bug fixes. In the case of Game Jam projects, I’ll also focus on releasing improvements to bring the finished game closer to how it was originally envisioned.
